This distance internship is proposed to learn and understand the development of smart and sustainable cities.

This internship is reserved for motivated candidates who would like to get familiar with urban management and the concept of a smart and sustainable city. During this internship, interns will start by learning the basics and challenges of urban management, they will be introduced to the concept of the smart and sustainable city.
 
Targeted audience

  • Any students interested in understanding how urban management departments work (police, water, energy, waste, transportations, etc.), how cities become more sustainable (food security, building design, healthcare, tourism, environment, etc.), and how to create smart and sustainable cities.

Duration

  • 4 weeks, distance internship (i.e. fully delivered online).
  • A new batch of interns starts every first week of the month.

Learning Outcomes

  • Examine all aspects of the key departments managing a city (missions, operations, organization, budget).
  • Explain how urban operations are managed in the different departments of the city like public security, water management, energy management, water and waste management, telecommunications, transportations.
  • Examine the technology used in the different departments of the city.
  • Comprehend what each department needs to do to improve its operations.
  • Explain why the use of technology creates value in the urban departments.
  • Explain how each urban department could innovate to create new value-added services or even new financial incomes.
  • Practice key digital tools to create top-of-the-art interactive digital content for an online session.

Career Prospectives

  • This internship will enhance the employability of participants in diverse sectors like real estate development, urban management, urban digital transformation, greenfield and brownfield developments, etc., in other words, any company or department working on urban management, water management, waste management, mobility, energy, environment, telecommunications, buildings and housing, and also food security in cities, healthcare, tourism, etc. Public and private companies are looking for candidates who understand what “smart city” means and how the use of technology can create value.
  • The interns will get in-depth knowledge of the concept of a smart and sustainable city.

About the instructor

  • This internship will be mentored by an experienced University Professor certified in urban digital transformation and smart city developments.

Scope of the internship

  • Week 1 : Review the challenges in cities and current trends.
  • Week 2 : Analyse different types of cities i.e. digital, intelligent, ubiquitious, ecologic, green, smart, sustainable, etc.
  • Week 3 : Understand the concept of a “smart and sustainable city”.
  • Week 4 : Discuss how urban departments are organized in various sectors like energy, water, transportation, security, environment, tourism, healthcare, etc. to be smart and sustainable.

Mentorship and organization

  • A weekly virtual meeting will be planned with the mentor. It will be either a group session (during lectures) or a 1-to-1 meeting.
  • Study material will be shared online through a Learning Management System.
  • The successful publication of quality content will be granted with a certificate of completion from INREGU.

Materials or Software required

  • Interns will not have to pay for any licenses to attend and benefit from this program, but they need a modern computer to install some of the applications and Zoom (for the virtual sessions).

Registration Process

  • Complete the registration form available online.
  • INREGU will check your profile and you will receive a notification email.
  • If the selection is passed, an interview will be organized.
  • Upon acceptance from both parties, the intern must pay the fee and will receive an internship invitation letter or email.
  • The internship can start at any next cohort (i.e. the following first week of next month).
